Private Messages Now Public? WHAT!?

Facebook is a great mechanism for communicating your thoughts without having to see the person you’re talking to. Private messages are so helpful to hash your feelings out without worrying about anyone else seeing them besides the person you are talking to. But what would you do if those messages were published for EVERYONE to see?!
There has been some question as to whether Facebook is posting private messages from 2009 or earlier, for the public to see. Several people have said they believe their private messages have been published on their Timeline. Facebook has denied this speculation, yet people still believe it to be true. After reading this article I decided to look back to my Timeline from before 2009 and some of the posts could have very well been private messages. What are your thoughts on this assumption? Do you think Facebook really does post private messages from long ago? Do you ever think of your private messages going public? Does this cause you to think twice about what you say in a private message?

  1. It seems that with more technology comes less privacy.

  2. Lauren - great post - just what I'm looking for. You got your information from an outside source and then you checked to see about it on your own FB account. Nice work!

  3. I totally could see this happening! Facebook is not all that it is cracked up to be. I think that They are going to start using it to black mail senators and celebrities. Have you seen the Social Network? It may not be the most accurate but I do truly believe he would be willing to screw over his 'friends' for a few bucks. He did once already. I would not be comfortable with my personal messages going public. I would feel quite violated and would definitely sue! Just kidding.

  4. First off, the movie did not accurately depict the facts surrounding Mark Zuckerberg. Both parties admit that it was dramatized for hollywood. Secondly, I think facebook has become a monster that even Mark is having a hard time controlling. Bottom line, don't trust facebook with anything you wouldn't want falling into the wrong hands. But that also goes for e-mail, twitter, and any other social media you broadcast over the internet.

  5. I could see Facebook doing this to its users. Even when you think your messages or profile are private, Facebook has the power and authority to expose these things to the public.

  7. i think that facebook has made some poor business choices lately and it would not surprise me if the started to make private info public (i dont know why they would do this, but it wouldn't be shocking). if they start to do this it would kill their credibility and the company.

  8. I never thought about this before, but if it is true private Facebook messages has been published it would be terrible. I can just go to my self, I have a couple off messages that are very private and would be terrible for me if they got published. This will really make me think twice before I publish something in the future....
